You may know that I recently resigned as editor-in-chief of Bylines Cymru. I did not wish to – as its founding editor, and having run it for years for little to no pay, I was deeply committed to it. However, needs must. And the old saying about a door opening as another closes has been proven true again. The universe provides.
This loss has freed me, at just the right time, to pursue the creation of a model of ‘journalism’ and other self-expression uninhibited by financial constraints or gatekeepers. Yes, I’m describing Substack there – we already have that, and many big-name journalists have left the media conglomerates with which they’ve become disenchanted to set up shop on this platform with us.
However, what I propose goes much further in making the most of the publication and communication tools that Substack offers and combines, and in extending the concept of community. I call it ‘hublication’, a word I’ve made up.
I’ve written a short pdf ebook to explain it all, which you can get by pushing the button. Like all hublication activities will be, it’s a ‘pay what you can’ thing for maximum accessibility and inclusion.
Though the ‘pilot project’ for hublication centres on Wales, I’d very much like to try it out here on a smaller scale. If I work with the theme of glimmers, doing things like sharing your Substacks in a pinned post and/or recommendations so you can connect with each other and find more followers and subscribers, hosting the odd event, making more use of chats / video / Notes, and offering some general Substack and creation coaching from time to time, would you be interested?
