That fabulous Miyazaki quote reminds me of the Wu Ch'êng-ên quote that stopped me in my tracks when I saw it on Sylvia Plath's tombstone: "even amidst fierce flames the Golden Lotus may be planted".
Ha, that doesn't surprise me – always brings on the synchronicities, does that tombstone. (I just opened up my copy of Monkey, and noticed that the quote appears on page 23 – which is quite significant for me, given my many Discordian friends)
