They are all alike. They lack compassion, are greedy, corrupt and see working people as a huge pool of opportunities - to use and abuse as they see fit. Penny probably thinks that she was hard done by life after the passing of her parents and that she got through life by herself but I doubt it. I'd bet hers was a situation of "see, lock-on, use, abuse and move-on" leaving one person after another in a pile of people who helped her and paid the price. I say this because it seems so easy and natural for people like her to behave so callously, so uncaring and completely oblivious to the harm they cause.

As I write this another twerp is hailing Penny as a winner on Sky news as the second ballot of the Tory Election is taking place. Sunak's demise is being forecast and it seems that Penny is ascending and only Liz may be able to thwart her. Heaven help us! I am beginning to fear that if Penny wins we might actually be worse off than when Boris was in charge. I am glad Suella is not anywhere on the radar as she is a particular kind of evil mixed in with stupidity and ignorance that would make Penny appear preferable. But no thanks. A plague on all their houses. Abe got shot and he was not that bad a person or politician, certainly nowhere as horrid as these remaining 8 in the Tory horror-show. I hope that something as final could take away all of Britain's problems in one go but I am just venting as it will never happen. I am off to drink some whiskey.

It's not true. It wasn't true when that article was written. Mordaunt joined the RNR in 2010. In 2014, having failed to fulfil her training commitments, pass an Admiralty board or receive a commission, she was removed from the active reserve list and placed on 'List 6'.

List 6 is a holding pattern. It allows officers to retain their rank - acting Sub Lieutenant, the lowest officer rank possible and one that nobody other than a Tory MP would be allowed to remain at for over four years, in Mordaunt's case - without any obligation to attend weekly drill nights or annual training.

You can only stay on List 6 for 5 years and in April 2019 - having never returned to active duty - she left the RNR. The same month, she was appointed an honorary Commander - three ranks higher than the rank at which she actively served.

That doesn't make her a Reservist. Daniel Craig is an honorary Commander; Ben Fogel is an honorary Lieutenant-Commander. Neither is actually a Reservist.

Unaccountably, she was promoted to honorary Captain a year later. The logic appears to have been that Mordaunt would use her position as an MP to promote the Royal Naval Reserve. That's not how Tory MPs work. What she did was use her position as an honorary RNR officer to promote herself, including a claim in her first leadership campaign that she would use her Naval leadership experience for the benefit of the nation.

She has NO Naval Leadership experience. She was permitted to drop to List 6 because she had been unable to fulfil her responsibilities. She did not receive a commission.

I can only recommend that you approach Byline Times or your area Bylines Network and pitch them a piece about this. Even still-mostly reputable national papers like the Independent with large legal and fact-checking teams (and clearly the forces themselves) haven’t felt they had solid enough sources to go with this.

Forces.net is not 'the forces themselves' - it's BFBS, a charity that provides TV and radio for the Forces.

The Wikpedia entry is pretty accurate... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Mordaunt#Naval_service

...as, unusually, is this Daily Mail piece which does provide a quote from an RN source, which is a good summary "‘She isn’t [currently] a trained or paid reservist, she’s never qualified or been commissioned. She’s been banging the naval drum for days and enough is enough. How she has presented herself – and how she has allowed herself to be presented – have been deeply misleading.’"

Studying the backgrounds of all the candidates is truly terrifying. Mary a one has any straight story. All have hidden agendas or secret backers. This is the quality of the people paid and elected to ‘serve’. This is a tremendous piece of research on Mordor. Thank you.

Very good and worrying piece The only point I would demur on is freeports. I think Mordaunt may well share the Charter City delusion, but so far I believe the UK Freeports is really little more than bonded warehouses plus a bit of tax relief and laxer planner rules. https://blogs.sussex.ac.uk/uktpo/tag/free-ports/

Great article - thank you. Note: the film about corporate malfeasance you recommend is actually called 'Dark Waters' (with an 's') from 2019, not to be confused with the 2005 horror film 'Dark Water' (or the 2002 Japanese original with the same title). Thanks!

I got linked here somehow and found it amusing how different it's possible for worldviews to be: I saw most of these points as positives. What negatives exist are still leagues better than the other candidates (or indeed previous Tory PMs). Hopefully Mordaunt can revive the Tory Party's fortunes somewhat, since as an LD I have been hoping for a 2024 hung parliament and currently Starmer seems in danger of getting a majority.

You are a reminder of how the LDs screwed the most of us in a coalition with the Tories in 2010 to 2015. Hell, you even hoping for another shot at it in 2024 as you seem to prefer the Tories to Labour. As for your worldview, you must be a horrid person. You'd have to be to see the points made above as positives. Stop masquerading as a LD. Embrace the total Tory you are!

Given that the above harms the most vulnerable in society, can you elaborate on what makes it positive, in your eyes? Genuine question- I don't understand.
